The drawing process has always been a keystone of our work. Ian Heard’s draftsmanship was recognised at an early stage in his career and he has maintained and developed his illustration portfolio constantly over the years. His client base is wide and his folio features many styles and techniques. His figure work has kept him busy with publishers, especially in the educational sector, including African and middle eastern and historical projects. He has also come to specialise in marine illustration. This partly due to his up-bringing in his family’s Cornish boatyard. He illustrated for the UK’s leading magazine on the subject, Yachting Monthly, for many years, undertaking their ‘Practical Seamanship. column and other feature articles. This brought him to the attention of such publishers as Hamlyn and Adlard Coles – probably the best known nautical publisher anywhere – and other publishers, including in the US.

Ian has also written and illustrated his own books. These illustrations have also found their way into galleries has enabled the illustrators art to become more acceptable in fine art circles. Some artworks have been successfully shown at the Drawings and Paintings fair in London and have been acquired by buyers with an eye for watercolour and linework. Ian is developing new book projects which will also be illustrated and continues to work with publishers, designers, agencies and clients who need his particular skills.
